Dr Nora Honkala recently finished her PhD thesis entitled "(Mis) Understanding Forced Marriages: International Law, Rights and Their Limits in Asylum Seeker Women's Cases". Her doctoral research project was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Nora Honkala's thesis examines the extent and the role which international law plays in the protection of the rights of asylum seeker women. The thesis interrogates cases of the Upper Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) and its predecessors from 2004- 2014 and reveals the pervasiveness of gendered and "cultural" assumptions, which as a consequence, discriminate against women asylum seekers. She now teaches at University of Reading's School of Law.
