Across the globe, anti-immigrant populists are winning elections – and using their political power to rewrite history. In this lecture, Dr Katy Long, the Executive Director of the California Migration Museum, discusses the alarming escalation of the drive towards “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History”. She explores the ways that cultural institutions can resist the spread of whitewashed and over-simplified narratives by crafting nuanced, research-based stories about migration and displacement, and makes a case for why it is so important that Forced Migration researchers think creatively about how to engage the wider public beyond the lecture hall.

The event will begin with a drinks reception at 4:45pm folowed by the lecture. This event is free to attend and open to all but registration is required.

This public event marks 10 years of the RLI's successful Master's degree in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies by distance-learning, which has opened up postgraduate education opportunities to those working in the field across the globe. The event features a distinguished lecture from inaugural module convenor Dr Katy Long, and reflections from students past and present.
