The Master’s in Refugee Protection celebrates 10 year anniversary

Celebrating 10 years of the Master's in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies

This month the School of Advanced Study’s Refugee Law Initiative hosted a special event to mark 10 years of the distance learning Master’s in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies.

Delivered through University of London Worldwide, the MA in Refugee Protection serves a diverse student cohort of professionals in the refugee, human rights and humanitarian field based across the globe. This special celebration event was an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the programme and it’s student body.

As commented by programme director Professor Sarah Singer:

"We launched in 2014 and we weren’t quite sure what would happen, but I think it’s right to say we have been absolutely bowled over by the reach and impact of the programme to date, and the way it has touched the lives of so many in the refugee protection field and beyond."

Over the past 10 years the programme has served students from over 100 countries across the globe, who study part-time alongside often very demanding professional roles. As Professor Singer noted, “I’m continually amazed by the sheer commitment of our students, from working in dangerous contexts to studying in the most complex situations.”

Professor Singer highlighted that the award winning Master’s programme consistently receives the highest commendations from external examines, reviewers and, most importantly, from students. Last year the programme received a 98% approval rating in the University Student Experience Survey, the highest of any programme at the University.

A special video featuring a range of students and alumni was created to mark the event, which also featured inaugural module convenor Dr Katy Long, who spoke to the theme “Breaking through the Wall: Taking Forced Migration Research Outside the Academy”, reflecting on her academic career and transition into public engagement on refugee and migration issues.

The programme team are hosting a special live webinar for those interested in learning more about studying on the programme, which will be held on Refugee Day - Friday 20th June, 3:30-4:30pm.
