Bio
Irem Sengul holds degrees in international relations and law from the Middle East Technical University (B.S in International Relations, M.S in Middle East Studies), SOAS (M.A in international law), and University of Warwick (PhD in law). She successfully defended her PhD thesis titled ‘Rethinking Temporary Protection in Turkey: Legality, Uncertainty and Homemaking in the City of Gaziantep’ in 2019. She's held academic positions, and has had teaching experience, in the Middle East Technical University and University of Warwick.
Currently, she works at Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University (Turkey) as an Assistant Professor of International Law. Her research interests include Turkish refugee law, temporary protection regimes, gendered issues in refugee protection, socio-legal studies, and qualitative research. Recently, she has been involved in a project funded by the Journal of International Women’s Studies which focuses on the refugee women’s participation to decision-making processes in Turkey.
